The novel The Great Gatsby, written by F.Scott Fitzgerald during the Prohibition,is one of the greatest American classic works, which directly depicts the significant American political and social issues brought about by the National Prohibition. The Prohibition culture in The Great Gatsby is interpreted from the perspectives of the relationship between the text and the historical situation, the social rules and dictates found within the text, and a reflection of the work’s historical situation as evidenced in the text, emphasized by New Historicism or Cultural Studies. The multiple representations of the Prohibition culture in The Great Gatsby, such as the American drinking binges, wide spread of illegal alcohol, the increase in gang rivalries, the corruption of government officials, the emergence of flappers’manners and conduct, help better understand the intrinsic link between the novel and the National Prohibition.
