Relations Between Butchers in Chaozhou and Local Society in the Late Qing Dynasty

屠户群体在中国传统社会里通常并不为社会主流所关注。清末大力推行厘金制度,向各行各业开征税捐,捐目繁多。在潮州,以屠户为首的商人罢市事件使得厘金制度在该地区难以推行。屠户及抗捐事件成为地方社会的焦点。屠户与地方的教育、节庆等日常事务有着密切的关联,屠户既是社会劳动生产者,也是地方事务的重要参与者。

Butchers were usually ignored by upper social strata in traditional Chinese society.The strike of Chaozhou merchants led by the butchers was a damage for the implementation of the tax policy.Butchers and the strike became the focus of local society.According to the analysis,butchers were closely related to education,festival and the other local affairs.Butchers were not only working producers,but also important participants in local affairs.
