曹雪芹《红楼梦》前八十回对香菱的描写,表现出香菱"根并荷花一茎香"的自体光辉、"憨呆"而又具有一缕淡淡清香的性格色彩和有所期待而又驯服的心理曲线。香菱的命运正如她的名字"甄英莲"(真应怜)一样,是"菱花空对雪澌澌"的凄凉悲剧,作为"红楼"第一个"薄命女",其诗与美,甚至其整个人生命运,都被她所处的那个悲剧社会所毁灭。

In the first eighty chapters of CAO Xueqin’s The Story of the Stone,Xiangling is described as“Your stem grew from a noble lotus root”which reflects her own brilliance,the naivety and a touch of fragrance about her,and her expectant and tame psychological curve.Her destiny,just her name“ZHEN Yinglian”(meaning pathetic)implies,is a miserable tragedy described as“That caltrop-glass which shines on meltings now!”As the first“unlucky girl”in“the red mansion”,her poetry and beauty,even her whole destiny are ruined by the tragic society in which she lives.
