Cervical spondylotic myelopathy is the most common cause of spinal cord dysfunction in adults.Paradoxically, the pathobiological mechanisms associated with the progressive loss of neural tissue in the spinal cord of cervical spondylotic myelopathy patients is not clearly understood. The results of many studies in this field in20th century have shown that spinal cord compression models are indispensible not only in investigating the efficacy of therapeutic interventions but also in gaining a better understanding into the molecular pathways involved.Preclinical studies on spinal cord compression require a reproducible, gradable, and quantifiable animal model. In this paper, the author elaborates on the establishment of an animal model of spinal cord compression from the aspects of the selection of animals, the production of animal models an d neurological assessment in spinal cord injury.
