《红楼梦》中的薛宝钗,在贾府这个派系摩擦、嫡庶争夺、主奴矛盾非常复杂的环境中,依仗她的所谓"金玉良缘"经营贾府,争取得到宝玉的"好风凭借力,送我上青云"以实现自己的志气才略。她需要进取时能"行为豁达"、"小惠全大体",该"退守"时则能"藏愚"、"守拙";她自私伪善、阴险残忍、冷酷无情,对于封建制度、封建思想、封建礼教从自觉卫道到自愿的殉葬;她从一个"清净洁白的女儿",异化成为了冷酷无情的"沽名钓誉"的"国贼禄鬼"。

Attempting to obtain Baoyu’s belief that“When the strong wind comes he will whirl us upwards into the skies”to realize her ambition,Xue Baochai in The story of the Stone relies on what she calls“the marriage rites of gold and jade”to make something out of herself in the Jia family where the clash between factions,scramble for wives and concubines,friction between owners and slaves are very complicated.When she wants to advance,she has“a generous,accommodating disposition”and shows“how small concessions can be made without loss of dignity”.When she wants to withdraw,she hides“in a cloak for stupidity”and prides herself on her simplicity.Selfish and hypocritical,she is first a voluntary defender and last a funerary object of feudal system,ideology and Confucian ritualism.She is dehumanized from a“pure,innocent girl”into a cold and merciless one who joins“the ranks of time-servers and place-seekers,who sets such store by reputation”
