福泽谕吉的文明观一方面为日本在“黑船来航”后的救国之路指明了方向，另一方面其中隐藏的如将战争视为实现文明的一种手段等诸多偏颇观点，，也对后世的日本社会和国民的历史观造成了极大的误导作用。福泽谕吉在日本近代史上的重要地位使我们必须全面认识这一战后日本受害者意识来源之一的文明观哲学，并进一步解读其对战后日本历史观的消极影响。纵然福泽的文明观有其智慧之处，但后世却夸张其有点而忽略了其导向对外侵略的倾向。这种片面理解在一代又一代日本国民观念中得到不断加强，影响深远。福泽用其善变和具有讽刺意义的双重标准让人不得不重新审视其文明观对于整个日本社会在战争责任问题上的偏颇和恶劣影响。
