母爱是非裔美国人找到自我的重要因素之一。《最蓝的眼睛》中,黑人小女孩皮克拉由于缺乏母爱,迷失了自我,最终走向疯狂。而克劳蒂亚姐妹却在母爱的庇护下快乐成长。被白人文化殖民的黑人民众,唯有通过倾听母辈们的故事,了解母亲的伤痛,以及对黑人母辈所代表的传统文化的认同,才能找到迷失的自我。

Maternal love is an important factor for African Americans to find themselves.In"The Bluest Eye",due to lack of maternal love,little Pecola loses herself and eventually is driven to be crazy.While Claudia and her sister grow up happily under the shelter of maternal love.For African Americans colonized by white culture,to listen to mothers'stories,to understand mothers'pain and to accept traditional black culture passed on from mothers are effective methods to construct their self-identity.
