The Plant-Coded Language and the Plant-Vehicled Metaphorical Culture of the Cosao People

搓梭人有自己的语言,但没有文字,他们曾使用过400余种植物传递信息,可将其界定为"植物暗语"。搓梭人的植物暗语有谐音双关、概念隐喻、交融互补3种编码方式,通过一种或几种植物组合传达特定的意思。植物暗语扎根于搓梭人的文化背景,形成独特的隐喻文化,是搓梭人语言和文化的重要表征。

The Cosao people have their own speech but no script.In their speech,they used to employ more than400types of plants to convey meanings,and their language could be termed a“plant coded”one.A plant or the combination of several plants was used to communicate particular meaning through three ways of coding,i.e.homophonic pun,conceptual metaphor,or complementary integration.The Cosao people’s plant-coded language was deeply rooted in their metaphorical culture.Using plants as a code is a unique feature of their language and culture.
