The Compiling Concept of A Course of Lessons in Spoken Mandarin

《华英联珠分类集成》(A Course of Lessons in Spoken Mandarin)是20世纪初以古安(Gouin)教学法为指导编写的一本口语教材。作者文焕章(J.Endicott)提倡学习整个句子,并说出完整的句子,全书100课,全部由句子构成,体现了"句本位"的教学观。本书旨在口语教学,书中不解释语法规则,不建议学生在初始阶段认读汉字,强调学生应该尽早养成学习谚语、俗语的习惯。为了增加趣味性,教材选取了很多中国历史和故事,这样学生在学习汉语知识的同时,还可以增强对中国文化的了解。为提高教材的可用性,作者还根据学习需求增加了很多新内容,并译成英文。另外,课本的设计也大大方便了学生的使用。该教材虽然也有不尽如人意之处,不过,对当今汉语教材编写仍有借鉴意义。

A Course of Lessons in Spoken Mandarin is an oral Chinese textbook which compiled under the didactics of the Gouin Series.The author J.Endicott promoted the study and speaking of the whole sentence,the whole book contained 100 lessons,consisted of sentences.It embodied the concept of sentence-based teaching.Aimed at oral Chinese teaching,the book didn’t explain any grammar rules,the author didn’t suggest the students learning characters,but hope the students cultivating the habit of learning proverbs and sayings as early as possible.Chinese history and stories were chosen as teaching materials to increase the interest of the textbook,thus the students could not only learn Chinese knowledge,but also enhance the understanding of Chinese culture.The author also added some new contents and translation to make the textbook more practical.In addition,the design of the textbook was convenient for student’s use.Although some imperfectionsstill existed,the textbook was a good reference in the compilation of Chinese textbooks.
