When I first asked about the logistics situation of the Rumaila Project,the project leader told me,“Gao Ming is responsible for the logistics clearance.He will tell you what you want to know.”Meeting Gao Ming,however,a staff member from Egypt with curly hair and deep eye sockets,initially surprised me.His Arabic name is‘Mohammad Abdul Ali’.We greeted each other in English,and I began to ask him about the logistics.Again,I was surprised when he said to me,in fluent Mandarin,“You can speak Chinese to me,I got it.”His Mandarin was pronounced correctly,even though his wording was slightly humorous.I told him that his Chinese was excellent.He replied,“It’s not that good.I should learn more.”I said,“You’re very modest.”Again,his answer was unexpected:“I haven’t got a beard yet.”He even knew Chinese allegorical sayings.That’s quite impressive.
