摘要
乔治·斯坦纳是当今世界一流的百科全书式的学者。在1980年12月23日发表于《纽约客》上的文章《审视后的生命》中斯坦纳讲述了令他难忘的芝加哥大学和给他留下深刻印象的罗伯特·梅纳德·哈钦斯校长。斯坦纳认为一个好的大学应该像芝加哥大学的校长哈钦斯那样锐意改革,注重培养学生的思辨能力和挑战传统的精神;注重培养学生阅读经典的兴趣和能力;注重提倡"精神之独立和思想之自由"的大学精神。
George Steiner is a world-class encyclopedic scholar.In his article“An Examined I.ife!,published in New Yorker on December 23,1980,Steiner tells of his unforgettable of Chicago and his deep impression of Robert Maynard Hutchins who is then the president of the University of Chicago.Steiner regards that a good university should be like president Hutchins who is keen on reforming,focus on cultivating students"ability of speculation and their spirit the tradition,therr interest and ability of reading classics,and advocating university spirit of“the spirit of independence and freedom in thinking”.
