Constructing Harmonious Theravada Buddhist Temples: Insights and Lessons Learned from Yunnan

云南省南传佛教寺院因其小而散的布局、相对优越的经济条件、宗教与政治的紧密连接及承担文化和公共空间提供者的角色,使得历史上南传佛教寺院处于一种有序而和谐的状态。现代政治经济秩序的变迁导致的宗教在社会中的相对剥夺感导致南传佛教寺院出现僧侣数量减少、素质降低等问题。部分寺院外籍僧侣的入住成为威胁南传佛教寺院和谐运行的突出因素。提高境内僧侣素质、充分发挥布章和老人在寺院管理和满足信众宗教需求方面的功能,是解决这一问题的可能途径。

Theravada Buddhism temples are geographical widely distributed in good economic condition area in Yunnan,where those temples also function as the bridge between religion and political regime and play a role in cultural and public space.As such,it is historically in a harmonious statue.Nevertheless,to some extent,religion has been partially displaced from people’s daily-life along with the current changes of political economy,which leads to a decline of both quantities and qualities of monks in those temples.In some temples,immigrated foreign monks have interrupted the harmonious statues.To change the current situation,it is important to improve the quality of local monks,enhance the role of Buzhang and elders in management and meet the needs of believers.
