There appear stories of serpents in Japanese myths and legends showing an important role of the serpent belief in Japanese people’s spiritual life.Through the serpent legends,we can see that the serpent belief reflects Japanese national character of advocating nature from ancient times and the contradictions and conflicts in the course of tribal invasions and agricultural development in history. The state of both deity and demon and the contradiction and agreement in serpent belief with Japanese characteristic culture from one side.
