1933年察哈尔抗战前后,汤玉麟的政治态度极为复杂。他为迷惑日本,索回被日伪没收的巨额财产,骗枪骗饷,遂挂起了东亚同盟军、协和军的牌子。因为不战而退丢失热河省,北平军分会给其以撤职留军的处分。国民政府又怕其投敌,为日本所用,遂采取了一些安抚措施。汤玉麟也曾向居住张家口的冯玉祥问策,表示要参加抗日同盟军。但其没有马上与日本决裂,又认为张家口抗日不是长远之计,遂没能及时地移防靠近抗日同盟军防地。冯玉祥下野之后,恰有方吉联军南下准备进攻北平,社会上传闻方吉与刘桂堂、汤玉麟进行合作。然而,其对方吉两部最后没有支持,而是采作壁上观的态度。方吉两部被解决之后,该部也被宋哲元所收编。至此,纵横几十年的汤家军彻底消失了。
