TREASURE OF CHINA'S HERITAGE: URBAN CANAL SYSTEMS IN ANCIENT CHINA

本文拟从若干重要方面研究中国古代的城市水系,比如,江河水系如何影响城市选址,城市水系的规划建设,等等。文中总结了城市水系的十大功用:供水、交通运输、溉田灌圃和水乡养殖、军事防御、排水排洪、调蓄洪水、防火、躲避风浪、造园绿水和水上娱乐、改善城市环境。本文还提供了大量例证说明城市水系在稳定城址、促进工商业的发展、提供较高质量的生活居住环境,以及有助于形成城市的特色上的重要作用。文中强调城市水系对城市的重要性,必须保护好城市水系,以建设有中国文化特色的现代城市。文中研究了古温州城市水系的成就,并对温州古城水系的消失表示了忧虑。

This paper intends to study the urban canal system in ancient China in several important aspects,e.g.the waterways influence on site selection of cities,the planning and construction of urban canal systems,etc.Ten major functions of urban canal systems are summarized,including water supply,waterborne transportation,irrigation and aquaculture,military defense,draining of floods and waste water,flood storage and mitigation,fire fighting,ship sheltering,landscaping and recreations,as well as environment tempering.The paper provides rich examples to demonstrate the significant role that urban canal system play in stabilizing urban sites,promoting industry and commerce development,improving living environment improvement and embodying features of cities.It emphasizes that urban canal system is one of the most important embodiments of a city.It is conclude that the existing urban canal systems should be well conserved so as to construct modern cities with China's cultural features.It studies the achievements of the urban canal system of ancient Wenzhou,and worrying about the disappearing of urban canal system of Wenzhou.
