Standardized residency training or graduate medical education has been widely accepted as the necessary step for each medical graduate to become an independent practitioner.This article briefly summarizes the developmental history and current status of the pediatric residency training system in the United States.The critical roles of the American Board of Pediatrics and the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education in the organization and implementation of the pediatric residency training are emphasized.The training principle,total number of training programs and annual enrollments for pediatric residents,the basic requirements for the pediatric residency training programs and the specific curriculum are also explained.
