A second thought on translations of mountain names in Lishui City

由于汉语中存在一词多义的现象,如何找到恰当的对等语常会令译者感到困惑。以目前浙江丽水各大山名的英译为个案再行思考,以语用学理论为指导进行复译,通过辨析的方法探讨其更为恰当准确的译文,使山名英译的语用含义获得等效传达,令其随社会与时代的发展与时俱进,以促进跨文化交流。

In Chinese there exists a phenomenon of polysemy,one word with several equivalents of different meanings,which perplexes us frequently in finding an equivalent in the English language.By rethinking the present English translations of mountain names in Lishui City and discriminating word meaning,the paper tries to explore,from the perspective of pragmatic translation theory,the necessity of transmitting the pragmatic connotations in these Chinese mountain names.Thus more appropriate and effective English versions are provided to keep pace with the times and to help improve cross-cultural communication in Lishui.
