A Brief Exploration of Tang Xianzu's Outlook on Emotion and Principle

虽然汤显祖一直是"情"的代言人,但"以情反理"不是其唯一坚定的主张。汤显祖的情理观念是经过理想与现实的矛盾挣扎和人生体验后逐渐形成的,是反复变化、不断深化的。其情理观宏观上表现为肯定"情之所必有"、崇尚"至情"、反对外在伦理道德的压迫、主张"情"的理性化和社会化,是一种较为稳健、平衡的情理观。

Although Tang Xianzu has always been the spokesperson for“love”,“arguing for emotion while against principle”is not his only firm proposition.His outlook on emotion and principle came into being gradually via a contradiction between ideal and reality as well as his life experiences.The outlook kept changing and became more thorough step by step.From a macro perspective,it is characterized by an emphasis on the existence of emotion,an endorsement of“supreme emotion”,opposition to the oppression of ethnic rules,and an assertion of the rationalization and socialization of emotion,which is relatively solid and balanced.
