Glyndebourne Festival Opera from Theatre Buildings: A Design Guide

The original Glyndebourne theatre had just 300 seats.It was built in 1934 as an extension to a large country house in the Sussex Downs,owned by opera lover John Christie.Though the theatre had been extended over the years to provide 800 seats,it had become increasingly obvious that more radical changes were needed if the Opera Festival,which it housed,was to survive.The brief established the criteria for the new building:the theatre was to blend into its surroundings but be‘of its time’;the auditorium needed to be enlarged to provide 1,150 good seats while the intimacy of the original was to be retained;the acoustic had to be excellent.Facilities for staff,singers,orchestra and audience also needed to radically improved.
