Enclosure is acknowledged as one of the most far-reaching events during the course of the industralization in Britain.Contemporary studies on this subject are,to a large measure, relied upon the historical records, thus playing a role in supplements in seventeenth-and eighteenth-century English literature.A range of romantic poems and fictional works produced by Charlotte Smith adeptly reflects the mood under Enclosure-her protagonists mostly come under the shock brought by reforms on the land ownership, which spawns story lines ending up in happiness or tragedies. Moreover,as the author lives through hardships caused by then-drastic socio-economic changes, her works provide far more authenticity in recounting the closely felt affairs. The fact that Smith was personally a witness to Encloursure threads her writings with profoundly elegiac sentiment.
