Brief Analysis of Jia Lian

宝玉与贾琏,同为荣国府里的二爷,一雅一俗,构成了艺术形象的直接对比。前者"意淫",后者"皮肤滥淫"。俗人贾琏,表面惧内,背地拈花惹草,乃至浪荡成性。然而,尚不失善良底线。宝二爷是蝴蝶,琏二爷是蝉蜕,荣府两位二爷乃为顽石的阴阳两面,雅俗相映。

Jia Baoyu and Jia Lian,both masters in Rongguo Mansion,one elegant,the other vulgar,are sharp contrast of artistic images.Both are licentious,one in mind,the other in practice.The vulgar Jia Lian,appearing to be henpecked,privately philandering,even lecherous,is yet a man with his bottom line morality.If Baoyu is the butterfly,Jia Lian must be the cicada slough.The two masters of the Rongguo Mansion are in fact the two corresponding aspects of human,contributing to the artistic achievement of the whole book in characterization.
