The Analects of Confucius by W.E.Soothill has been rated as a classic by Oxford University Press and enjoyed great popularity among English readers.It serves as a good example of Thick Translation with an abundance of subtexts constructing the historical and socio-cultural context of the source text.By combining loyalty to the source text and the free play of the translator’s subjectivity,Soothill showed his understanding and application of the principle of Confucius’Golden Mean.
