Based on various theories on“gaze”,this essay investigates Louise Erdrich’s concern on this phenomenon in her new novel Shadow Tag.The relationship between Irene and Gil reflects two kinds of gaze:man looking at woman, white society looking at Indian culture. On the one hand, the object of gaze is usually deprived of the right of self-expression and thus might employ false narrative so as to shift the direction of gaze and subvert the original power discourse. On the other hand, through the gaze, the subject might attain deeper understanding towards others and self as well.
