Requiem for a Dream——On Edna's Self-pursuit in The Awakening from the Perspective of Jung's Archetype Theory

凯特·萧邦的代表作《觉醒》具有从多种角度解读的深刻性与丰富性。荣格原型理论中关于"人格面具""阴影"以及人格发展理论的阐述,为解析艾德娜的人格嬗变与分裂以及其最终悲剧命运的解读提供了新的视角。结合荣格的人格原型理论,本文指出,人格面具与阴影的频繁冲突与失衡导致艾德娜人格结构的不完善,消耗了其大量的生命力。艺术家梦想归于破灭标志着艾德娜超越现实的自我追寻的最终失败。

As a feminist literary canon by Kate Chopin,The Awakening boasts of profound interpretation from a variety of perspectives.By applying psychologist Jung’s archetype theory concerning persona and his elaboration of theory of personality development,the paper is intended to analyze Edna’s split personality and her tragedy in pursuing self realization.This paper argues that the constant conflicts between persona and shadow in Edna’s personality consume too much of her vitality,giving rise to the incompletion of her personality structure.The death of Edna’s dream of being an artist symbolizes her final failure of rebellion and self-pursuit.
