The non-cytolytic immune response caused by herpes simplex virus(HSV)infection is the basis of its latent infection.Although the replication of HSV in the latent phase is inhibited,the gene of HSV still exists in the normal nerve cells.Studies have showed that the host interferon system plays an important role in the balance of HSV in regulating its own latent infection or replication.This article outlined how interferon regulates latent-replicative homeostasis during infection,which will help researchers gain insight into the molecular mechanisms of HSV infection.
