During the Nationalist Revolution,Shao Futang,an English language secretary working at a medicine company in Shanghai, frequently sent public letters with the penname“F.D.Z.”to the North China Herald to articulate his standpoints and opinions to protect the national esteem and the national interest. The North China Herald published his letters and these letters invoked the attention and refutation from foreign readers of this newspaper. In 1924,Shao Futang’s letter appeared in the North China Herald for the first time to argue that the Chinese people’s anti-imperialist demand to terminate unequal treaties with the powers was not xenophobic but justified. After that,he challenged foreign residents’criticism against the Chinese civilization and their depreciation of the Nationalist Revolution. He also urged the Municipal Council in Shanghai to reform to represent the Chinese residents’benefits. Many foreign residents wrote letters to the newspaper to oppose Shao’s opinions. The interaction between Shao and the foreign residents showed the Chinese people’s rising nationalist consciousness and the foreign residents’stubborn colonialist mentality in the mid-1920s.
