Meanings beyond Pictures: the Localization of the Lithographic Technology in Modern China(1876-1945)

摘要 发轫于德国的石版印刷术以其成本低廉和操作便利的优势,自19世纪由欧洲传教士引入中国,迅速成为知识传播的重要助力,见证了近代中国一个多世纪的社会变迁。石版印刷术作为一种外来技术,其本土化过程受到设备、材料、人、市场等众多因素的型塑;但作为一种新的印刷方式,石版印刷术为中国的出版人提供了更有利于图文并茂的传达信息与知识,尤其给图像和乐谱的印刷植入中国元素,创造了更大的发挥空间。 The lithographic technology originated in Germany had the advantages of low cost and convenience in usage,so it soon became an important tool to distribute knowledge since its introduction into China from Europe by missionaries in the nineteenth century.It witnessed the social transformation in modern China in more than one century.The localization of the lithographic technology was influenced by many factors such as machines,raw materials,personnel,market and so on.As a new print method,lithography provided Chinese publishers with technology more suitable for printing pictures to facilitate the communication of information and knowledge.In particular,this technology made it possible to insert Chinese elements into printed pictures and musical notes so as to increase potential creation.
