A Significant Detail of the Split Within the Coterie of the New Youth

《新青年》同人的分裂,已有很多文章和著作论及,大体都是从思想分歧上加以分析。近年因胡适与其好友许怡荪的通信被发现,胡适于1919年1月20日致许怡荪的信上明确说道,他打算将《新青年》收归自己来办。此意虽未实现,但这一个重要细节对分析《新青年》同人走向分裂的过程有重大关系。它透露出胡适与陈独秀争夺《新青年》,以引领不同的思想和政治路向,这才是分裂的实质性意义所在。

A large number of articles and works have discussed the split within the coterie of the New Youth,and mostly analyzed it from a perspective of the divergences of thoughts.Due to the recent discovery of Hu Shih’s correspondence with Xu Yisun,it is known that Hu Shih was intended to take back the New Youth and put himself in charge of it according to the letter from Hu Shih to Xu Yisun on Jan.20,1919.Although this was not realized,the significant detail was vitally related to the split within the coterie of the New Youth.It reveals that Hu Shi strove with Chen Duxiu for the New Youth in order to lead it to a different ideological and political direction,which was the essence of the split.
