爱丽丝·奇普曼·杜威作为约翰·杜威的妻子,长期被教育史学者所遗忘。爱丽丝是美国第一代接受高等教育的女性,她在促使青年杜威的理智兴趣从古典哲学扩大到现代社会领域,特别是教育问题的过程中,发挥了关键性影响。她参与创办和管理芝加哥实验学校,协助杜威将他提出的理论原则应用于学校生活,并不断加以修正与调整。爱丽丝为美国女性争取平等的教育和政治权利而努力,在与杜威的远东之行中也为中国的男女合校运动作出了贡献。爱丽丝的一生折射着19世纪末20世纪初美国社会和教育的变迁、进步和争议,研究杜威的教育理论和社会行动不能忽视爱丽丝的存在与影响。
Alice Chipman Dewey,the wife of John Dewey,has been forgotten by the historians of education.Alice was the first generation of women who went to college in the United States.She played a crucial role in the shitt of young Dewey’s interest from classical philosophy to modern social study,especially the study of the education problems.She participated in the founding and management of the Chicago experimental school,assisted Dewey in applying his theoretical principles to school life,and constantly revised and adjusted t.Alice fought for American women’s equal rights to education and political participation,and also contributed to China's coeducation campaign in her trip to the Far East with Dewey.Alice's life reflected the changes of the education and society in the United States in the late 19th century and the early 20th century.We can’t ignore Alice and her influence while studying John Dewey's education theory and social action.
