Matter Matter explores the theory of New Materialism developed by the Mexican-American philosopher,Manuel DeLanda, who was himself highly influenced by the ideas of French philosopher,Gilles Deleuze. The article contrasts the materialist ideas in his seminal book,A Thousand Years of Non-Linear History,to the emphasis on representation, symbols and meaning in postmodern books such as Learning from Las Vegas. It argues that not only do DeLanda's ideas move us beyond the dematerialized, scenographic thinking of postmodernism and offer a more sympathetic approach to science and technology, but that they also offer a new paradigm for thinking about the world in material terms that extends to the whole of social life.
