This study was conducted to investigate the effects of daidzein on growth performance, antioxidant capacity and immune function of bull calves.Eight healthy 6-month old bull calves(143.7±5.6 kg)were randomly divided into two groups. The control group was fed with a basal diet, and the treatment group was fed with a basal diet supplemented with 300 mg/kg of daidzein. The results showed as follows:compared with the control group, the average daily gain in the treatment group increased by 97.1 g/d(P=0.026);the content of total super oxided dismutase(T-SOD),serum glutathione peroxidase(GSH-Px),serum IgG and IgM,and IGF-1 in the treatment group increased by 12.2%(P=0.029),15.5%(P=0.046),27.5%(P=0.003),11.4%(P=0.008),and 49.3%(P<0.001),respectively,the serum glucose(P=0.005)and serum total cholesterol(P=0.080)in the treatment group reduced and tended to reduce, respectively. This study demonstrates that supplementation with daidzein in the diet could enhance the growth performance, antioxidant capacitiy, and immune capacity of bull calves.
