Lost and Found: an Analysis of Narrative Time in The Gap of Time

珍妮特·温特森因其大胆新颖的写作手法,一直是英国当代一位颇具争议的女作家。《时间之间》改写自莎士比亚经典剧作《冬天的故事》,同样延续了她独特的写作风格。小说看似复杂散乱的时序背后,其时间规律实则有迹可循。本文通过对小说的时序与主要事件的重复频率分析,得出作者温特森主要采用了倒叙与重复叙述的手法,将主要事件经不同讲述者之口一次次重现出来,不仅勾勒出原著的故事线条,也最终回归了原著主题——爱与宽恕。

Jeanette Winterson has always been a controversial woman writer in the UK for her bold and innovative writing style.The Gap of Time is rewritten from Shakespeare's classic The Winter's Tale,which also continues her unique writing style.Behind its seemingly complex narrative order,the regularity of time in the novel,in fact,can be traced.Through the analysis of order and frequency of a main event in the novel,this paper concludes that Winterson has used the narrative strategies of"analepsis"and"repeating narrative"to repeat a main event again and again through different narrators.In this way,she not only sketches the story line of the original book,but also returns to the original theme:love and forgiveness.
