The Italian writer Moravia’s The Time of Indifference was the first of the European existentialism.The novel successfully shaped the characters such as Michele and truly reproduced the living conditions of modern people under the Italian fascist rule.The Russian writer Dostoevsky’s Notes from the Underground is considered to be the prelude of existentialism.The novel shapes the image of the basement and reveals the survival anxiety of people during the transformation of Russian society.The focus of the two works focuses on the tragic fate of individual existence in a particular era.By analyzing the absurd existence of characters in the works,irrational inner activities and tragic free choices,we explore and compare the existential ideas contained therein.
