Based on the transitivity system of the ideational function of one of the three major functions of Halliday's functional grammar,this paper analyzes the deep symbolic meaning of Lawrence's famous short story The Shadow in the Rose Garden.What's more,it deeply analyzes the authors choice of the transitivity system and the function of the system in shaping the character,highlighting the plot as well as expressing the theme.It reveals the deep meaning conveyed by these stylistic choices,especially the deep symbolic meaning,and further explains the application value of using the transitivity system in discourse analysis.
