In the cacophony of writings about the modern Chinese history, moderate and rational‘non-revolutionary’voices are covered up.This article intends to examine the discourse and practice of cosmopolitanism in the twentieth-century China by looking at how it was formed in Shanghai with its public culture in the first half of the twentieth century and by re-sorting out and reviewing the alternative views held by Zhou Zuoren and Lin Yutang, two well-known writers in the last century,in relation to the then cultural issues in China,as these views were denounced as conservative and backward, bourgeois, decadent and pedantic. Now,with the hindsight of history,we might explore the Chinese modernity more and hold fairer judgements of and commentaries on the then thinkers.
