On the Expressive Effect of Vague Words in Chinese Language

语言是人类最重要的交际工具,以表情达意为基本目的。传统语言学以语言表达得清楚、正确为准则,而语言的实际运用中充满了模糊现象,人们最常用的词语都带有模糊性。模糊语言是一种含蓄练达的表达方式,可以传达丰富的言内言外意义,有比精确语言更强的表达功能。模糊表达作为一种普遍现象,非常值得研究。模糊语在多数时候表达的意义比较含混,但在一定程度上,较之精确语言,其表达更加客观准确、活灵活现,有更高的表达效率。

Language is man’s important tool for communications,which is focused on the basic aim of expressing man’s feelings and meanings.According to traditional linguistics,the standards for effective communications should be clear and correct expressions,while in practical use of language,we have so many vague expressions,and,in addition,the most often used words show vagueness.Actually,vague words is an implicit but brief way of expression,which can convey rich surface meanings as well as further implications,showing stronger expressive functions than accurate words do.As a general phenomenon,vague words are indeed worth studying.In most expressions,vague words show fuzzy meanings,but to a certain extent,compared with accurate words,they are more objective and flexible,showing better expressive effects.
