Parasitic nematodes of the gastrointestinal tract has been reported as a major limiting factor to ruminant production worldwide. However, until now, control of these parasitic diseases has normally relied on chemical anthelmintic in China. The increasing prevalence of anthelmintic resistance in small ruminant has provided us a spur for research into alternative strategies that aim to reduce reliance upon using chemoprophylaxis. The researches show that before or at times of gastrointestinal nematode(GI)infections,an increased supply of protein and high quality protein feed can reduce GI establishment and fecundity, and increase the‘resilience'and‘resistance'of the host to gastrointestinal nematode infection. Therefore, this article provides a brief overview of the effects and mechanisms of dietary protein on gastrointestinal nematode infections in sheep and goat,in order to provide an alternative approach to control GI infections.
