In Lawrence's novel Sons and Lovers,the image"hearth"appears repeatedly.Hearth,like a peaceful harbor,binds each member of the family closely.Therefore,its original meaning is home,a home with"heart",which represents warm and harmonious family culture in the west.But in Sons and Lovers,Lawrence uses exactly the opposite and endows it a series contrasting features such as dying out and coldness.By using this image,the author tries to reveal family alienation in modern society,illustrate conflicts and fights among family members and even to criticize the damage industrial civilization has made to family and interpersonal relationship.
