本文从韩礼德对"semiotics"一词解释的角度,论述语言是一门符号意义学的内涵;讨论意义、功能、语境、系统的概念以及这些概念之间的关系;阐述系统功能语言学的哲学基础。文章指出,韩礼德的一生是与"意义"同行的伟大一生,他所创建的系统功能语言学是一种适用语言学,将会对未来世界语言学的研究产生深远影响。

Taking Halliday’s interpretation of the term“semiotics”as the point of departure,this paper discusses the connotation of language regarded as a science of meaning,the concepts of meaning,function,context and system as well as the relationships among these concepts.It then elaborates on the philosophical basis of Systemic Functional Linguistics(SFL).The paper concludes that Halliday has spent a life dedicated to“working with the different meanings of meaning”,and that SFL as an appliable linguistics will exert a far-reaching world-wide influence on the development of linguistics in the future.
