The River Between Us by the famous American literature writer Richard Peck unveils the identity mystery of“free people of color”in America. In the form of historical fiction, the novel subtly combines the historical facts with fictional stories, depicting the distinctive and unique images of free people of color and the widely accepted mating customs in their ethnic group.Under the background of severe racial discrimination, the identity crisis of the free people of color was more complicated and embarrassing than any other pure ethnic group. The River Between Us provides new information for readers to understand the complex American racial history.
