Doris Lessing, the winner of Nobel Prize for literature in 2007,depicts a woman striving and struggling in the ups and downs in life in her debut work The Grass is Singing.Aiming at demonstrating the unremitting identity-reconstruction efforts of poor white women living in male-dominated South Africa, this paper explores the changeable and fluid identity of the heroine Mary from the perspective of gender performance theory raised by the postmodern feminist theoretician Judith Butler to analyze the cause of Mary’s failed subject reconstruction and reveal the great influence of social mechanism and cultural rights upon gender identity.
