曹雪芹和张爱玲在小说中都利用语句具有的潜台词、语词或语句的缺失、省略或淡化情节制造叙事空白,表现出明显的相似性,创造出虚实相生的艺术意境。但张爱玲又巧妙地运用换行或标点、意象、语言的音乐性制造空白,彰显出其在空白艺术上的创新。

Cao Xueqin and Zhang Ailing created narration blankness by using subtexts,the absence of phraseology and sentence,plot omission and weakening to display obvious resemblance between the two and create an artistic mood of mutual promotion between imagination and reality.However,Zhang Ailing masterly makes use of newline,punctuation,image and the melodious features of language to showcase her innovation and development on artistic blankness in her novels.
