In the study of literary works, the study of plot development has always been highly respected, and researchers explore the development of the plot from various angles. However,in addition to the dominant process of plot development, there is a"recessive process".The recessive process, together with the dominant process, shapes a full-fledged character and enriches the connotation and theme of the work. This double narration is also presented in Oates’ The White Cat.On the one hand, its plot development focuses on how the husband kills the cat three times;on the other hand, behind the plot development, the recessive process also plays an important role.To some extent, the cat is the metaphor of his wife in the text. The fact that the husband kills the cat expresses the husband’s attitude towards his wife.In the process of the recessive narration, they reflect the disparity in age, economy, personality and psychology in contemporary social marriage. If we can explore the double narration in the text from the works,it is of great significance to grasp the profound theme of the work.
