With its convenient transportation, the Grand Canal became the most important transportation artery after the Song and Yuan Dynasties, resulting in prosperity in economy and culture along the Canal. Since the Song,Yuan,Ming and Qing Dynasties, traditional theatre has benefited from the nourishment of the Grand Canal, creating "a hundred flowers blossoming"along it,where a great number of important theatrical towns and famous opera masterpieces formed a peak in the history of theatrical development, promoting the integration of multiple genres, theories and styles of opera. Besides, the southern tours of the Ming and Qing emperors stimulated exchanges between different styles of opera and the maintenance of their traditions, which are still common practice today.
