The most influential portrait of the humanist Leon Battista Alberti(1404-72) in modern times is that provided by the Swiss historian Jacob Burckhardt in his monograph,The civilization of the Renaissance in Italy.Burckhardt’s description of Alberti “the universal man” mainly from his Latin autography the Vita, which was regarded in his time as a biography since it was narrated in the third person. The Swiss historian omitted and distorted the ironic and melancholic notes in Vita for turning Alberti into the incarnation of the Hegelian spirit of the times. The main objective of this article is to fill the details that scraped away in Burckhardt’s portrait of Alberti, meanwhile,to outline an organic profile of the life and thought albertiano.
