"生活审美"是人们不脱离生活母体,在生活原初场域中,对生存性行为和生活所用之物的非对象性的以实用性为基础的审美活动,研究领域包括人们的日常起居、技艺劳作、文化礼仪、实用艺术和节庆假日等,核心功能和价值在于反对人性分化、恢复个体的整一。"现代性"是生活审美研究的内在前提。与纯粹肉身狂欢的"快感"不同,生活审美的感性直观内在包含着超越性和批判性,具有动态性和切身体验性,不受特定阶层、特定时空、特定感官的局限而具有普泛性和普适性。
