The novel Light in August by Faulkner depicts Lena Grove as an naive,optimistic,emotional young woman. She is calm in tribulation and natural in beauty. Lena is not only a character but also a metaphor. She has a pair of eyes looking beyond the noisy world,a mirror against earthly life. Lena ’s Virgin-like tolerance and transcendental deity have been gleaming against the loneliness,uneasiness,struggle and suffering of the world. She is a light of hope against the world. Faulkner expresses his critique and reflection of Puritanism and racism in American Southern culture through creating the deity of Lena’s image.
