学衡派与欧文·白璧德视野下的东西方文化评价及其走向

民国时期,中国的十余名留学生投师于新人文主义代表人物欧文·白璧德的门下,成为了他的嫡传弟子。这些学生回国后,创办了《学衡》杂志,与新文化运动派分庭抗礼,他们由此被学界称为"学衡派"。欧文·白璧德以第三者的身份,对中国的新文化运动给予了关注和评价,呼应了这场旷日持久但未决胜负的中西方文化论争。时至今日,如何评价新文化运动,直接关乎到对待中西方文化的态度。着眼未来,中西文化的评价、取舍和走向问题,既是老生常谈,又是不得不关注的现实。重新审视学衡派与欧文·白璧德的新人文主义思想,对研究该问题具有重大的学术价值。

During the period of the Republic of China,a dozen Chinese students learned from Irving Babbitt,the representative of New Humanism.After returning to China,those students set up the magazine of Xueheng to act as a counterweight to New Culture Movement,which has been called“Xueheng School”by academic circles.Irving Babbitt,as a third party,paid close attention to and evaluated China’s New Culture Movement,and he responded to the debate between Chinese and Western cultures.Today,how to evaluate the New Culture Movement is directly related to the attitude towards Chinese and Western cultures.In the future,the evaluation,choice and trend of Chinese and Western cultures are not only a cliche,but also a reality that we have to pay attention to.It is of great academic value to re-examine Xueheng School and Irving Babbitt’s New Humanism.
