Rereading the Characters of Scarlett in Gone with the Wind from the Perspective of Literary Ethics

《飘》中思嘉的人物形象向来是评论的热点。从文学伦理学角度看,她当时的伦理环境对于女性是十分恶劣的:无论在爱情婚姻上、经济上,还是社会地位上女性都从属于男性,没有独立自主的权利。然而,思嘉从这三个伦理困境中做出了与传统女性不同的选择:选择建立在金钱基础上的婚姻,当家庭的经济支柱,当有社会地位的新女性。虽然从表面看这些选择都不符合当时对贤惠妇女的标准,但它们却都是以保全和发展家庭为前提的选择。思嘉的勇敢与坚强使塔拉庄园在战争中得以保存,她本人也在男权社会里争得一席之位。结合女性主义的角度来看,思嘉是个敢于打破伦理困境,做出适应时代潮流发展的伦理选择的女强人。

Scarlet in Gone with the Wind has been a focus in literary criticism.From the perspective of ethical literary criticism,Scarlett faces a tough ethical environment:women were subject to men no mater in marriage,economy or social status without independent right.However,Scarlett made different choices from traditional females.One of them was that she chose a money-oriented marriage;another was to become the breadwinner of her big family and then a woman pioneer with her own social status.Although her choices were not in line with the standards of virtuous women at that time,they protected and developed the family.Scarlett's bravery and strong will protect the Tara Manor in the war and she obtained a position in the patriarchal society.From the feminist point of view,Scarlett is a strong woman pioneer who bravely breaks through the ethical dilemma and makes ethical choices adapting to the development of the times.
