Philip Larkin and Thomas Hood's “I Remember,I Remember ”:The Narratological Analysis of Lyric Poetry

The title of contemporary British poet Philip Larkin's poem “I Remember,I Remember” is explicitly intended as a direct reference to the romantic childhood poem with the same title by Thomas Hood,another British poet of the nineteenth century.Philip Larkin used Hood's work as the inter-text of his own verse for its particular meanings.A comparative narratological study of the two poems of the same subject of childhood and growth memories revealed different and contrasting ideas.The childhood in Hood's poem is full of idealistic feelings and promising prospects,while Philip Larkin's poem conveys a sense of modern disillusionment,and this is a difference that tells romanticism and modernism apart.
